What I’m reading

Surgeon Atul Gawande’s book “Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Matters in the End” is essential reading for anyone concerned about having good quality of life as death nears. Ask yourself how you want to live, and ask your loved ones. I can’t recommend the book highly enough, and the PBS “Frontline” episode based on the book is also excellent.

What they’re saying

"In a few short hours, Alix led our group of skeptical, cynical journalists down a path of genuine enlightenment, a rare thing. Her no-bullshit approach to unearthing the fundamental errors we were making in trying to live good lives against the tides of severe work and self-sacrifice was surprising, sometimes astounding. I think all of us would agree that we're much better people for the experience."

— Ben Montgomery, Tampa Bay Times Pulitzer finalist and author of "Grandma Gatewood's Walk" and "Leper Spy"
